The Hope and Social Snowball

Last month, the lovely Hope and Social boys held another of their very special events in Leeds - the Christmas themed Snowball. As always, it was a wonderful day - Leeds Brewery created a special ale, various pubs were crawled, and 200 people sang Bon Jovi on the steps of the Town Hall before heading off for big band fun and turkey curry.
Malcolm Cruickshank and I were asked at an early stage to realise the boys’ idea of some festive merch for the day – some limited edition Christmas Decorations.
We knew laser cutting would give us great results, so embarked on a series of tests; where wood emerged as our material of choice. We had a few design ideas, one of which can be seen below - it was too complex to cut cleanly at a manageable size for decorations, but ended up becoming the logo for the whole event.

The final product was a set of three typographic decorations, featuring the name of the band. Laser cut from FSC accredited pine, they were rubbed with linseed oil, and repacked into their offcuts to minimise waste.

One of my favourite parts of the project were the offcuts from the ‘&’ decoration; fragile and beautiful in their own right. We still have a small pile of these waiting to be turned into something beautiful, so if you have any ideas, or would like some to play with, please let us know - Sarah Christie hopes to use them to create some jewellery - watch this space!

Once the decorations were done, we made use of the remaining time to create some other bits and pieces for the day, including this (very) sparkly Snowball sign! (Laser cut from MDF, sprayed blue, and liberally coated with glitter.)

The buzz surrounding the event was amazing. Tweets were flying and blogs were flooding in - full of pics and video captured on the day. Even better, our decorations caught the eye of the lovely Craftsville people a few days after the event, possibly as a result of so many people taking pics of them on their tree and posting them to Twitter!
